INDUSTRY DRIVEN, INDUSTRY FOCUSED PAGE | 9 " " "I was surprised by everyone's candidness during discussions. Everyone contributed, which was great to see." —Seth Burt, Safety Manager– Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada Conclusion The risk assessment and root cause analysis workshops for the automobile manufacturing industry provide clear direction for reducing injuries among workers in this sector: manage hazardous energy during regular operations. Energy sources such as electricity, hydraulic pressure, and stored mechanical energy are necessary components of the process; however, they can present serious risks if not managed properly. According to the workshop results, improving training, ensuring proper risk assessments are completed, and developing documentation that includes machine- specific and workplace-specific procedures will reduce the risk of injury for workers in this sector. By drawing on the insights gained from those who are directly involved with this work, WSPS will develop tools and resources that are tailored to the specific challenges faced by workers and managers in this industry. However, in the meantime, organizations can use this information to determine where to dedicate internal resources. "A big part of risk mitigation is understanding the risk and root causes before solutions are developed. That is how to really affect change," said Rishma Brenner, Senior Health and Safety Consultant with WSPS. WSPS will use the information gained from these workshops to drive solution development. The solutions and controls recommended by the group are meant to be scalable and accessible to workplaces of all sizes. "We will aim to get the information into the hands of as many organizations as possible," said Rishma.
