LANDSCAPE ONTARIO – WORKPLACE SAFETY TAILGATE TALKS © 2026, WSPS.CA 43 There are three areas to consider when working with a fall arrest system: Equipment Check equipment for any defects or damage before use. Once equipment has been involved in an incident, it should be removed from use, only once an incident/ accident investigation by the safety team and authorities has been completed can use be resumed. Ensure the equipment combination is properly engineered and inspected before using it for the job at hand (full body harness, anchor points, shock absorbers, shock absorbing lanyards, lanyards, snaps, hooks/connecting hardware, ropes/lifelines, retractable lifelines and rope grabs). Make sure the fall arrest equipment fits properly and is worn correctly. Equipment should never be shared between workers. Fall arrest equipment includes: full body harness, shock absorbers, locking snap hooks, rope grabs, D-rings, web lanyards, lifeline and anchor points. Procedures Ensure you have a clear plan on how to execute the work using the fall arrest system. Plan and be familiar with how to enter and exit safely an elevated surface. Make sure you are anchored securely to a fixed structure at all points of elevation. Incorporate a "buddy" system when working at heights and with fall arrest equipment.
