LOCKOUT TAGOUT (LOTO) TRAINING GUIDE 4 340-BQE-01-IMOT © 2024, Workplace Safety & Prevention Services (WSPS) 1 877 494 WSPS (9777) | 905 614 1400 | WSPS.CA 5) Be Impactful. This is LOTO training after all. The content of this training literally could save lives. Be direct when it comes to safety. Tell it like it is and help learners understand why this training is so important. Answering the question, "What's in it for me?" can help each learner relate to the training being provided. 6) Be Open to Questions. Encourage learners to ask questions. Attempt to answer each and every question, and if you do not have an answer right away, follow up after the training. Build a rapport with the learners and ensure that if something is not 100% clear they feel comfortable asking for clarification. Remember, some people do not feel comfortable asking questions in larger groups. Allow learners to connect after the training if they are more comfortable talking one on one. Consider developing a "parking lot" – this is a list that is maintained during the training to capture any questions that are still important but may be slightly off topic for this training. You may want to follow-up on them after training is complete. 7) On-Going Assessment of Skills. As part of the in-class training and practical elements there should be a way to evaluate the skills learned. As time goes on, supervisory staff should be conducting routine assessments to confirm that LOTO practices are being properly followed. If not, it is an opportunity for supervisors to coach their workers and ensure there are no gaps in their knowledge. These assessments should all be documented. It is critical to support company diligence in both the delivery of knowledge and confirmation that the training is being followed. After Training Following up with learners is an essential part of training. Keeping the lines of communication open will help the learner understand that they are not alone. Following up involves: 1) Responding to Any Unanswered Questions. Things that came up in training may require some additional investigation, for example, if there are specific items for LOTO of a specific machine. Be sure to respond to questions to the entire group, over email if possible, and ask if the response answers their question adequately. 2) Offering to Shadow. Each person learns at a different pace, and in diverse ways. Some learners may need additional support. Be open to providing that support, if required. WSPS.CA
