LOCKOUT TAGOUT (LOTO) TRAINING GUIDE 2 340-BQE-01-IMOT © 2024, Workplace Safety & Prevention Services (WSPS) 1 877 494 WSPS (9777) | 905 614 1400 | WSPS.CA 2) Identify Everyone Who Needs Training. This includes: workers who will, or are, expected to apply LOTO (Authorized Individuals), persons who are impacted by the application of LOTO – such as individuals working in the surrounding area (Affected Individuals) and Supervisors (under legislation, they have to ensure that procedures are followed, so they not only need to understand the procedure but also know what it looks like in practice – this would likely require some guidance on skill assessments). 3) Know Your Learner Needs. It is also helpful to identify and be aware of any prior experience and/ or barriers that your learners may have during training, so that you can accommodate accordingly. Additionally, you may want to suggest that your learners do some LOTO awareness training before hand, such as WSPS' Lockout Tagout eLearning Course, to ensure that everyone has a basic foundation of LOTO principles. 4) Know Your Machinery. What machinery will you be training on? What are the hazards and hazardous energies? Will there be a specific time window when specific machinery is available to support the training? Remember, when conducting practical LOTO training, it is best not to use equipment that is scheduled for production purposes at that time – this will eliminate any potential confusion or incident. 5) Procure LOTO Hardware and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Ensure that all related lockout hardware (eg. locks, tags, hasps, plug/valve covers, etc.) is available and ready to go at the time of training. Will you and/or your learners be required to wear PPE? If so, order early so you have everything available in time. 6) Print Documentation. While it is nice to have electronic copies of documentation, preparing print copies of procedures for learners can be helpful so they can follow along, highlight key points, and refer to it in the future. You may even want to print a few blank pages and bring extra pens to ensure that, if learners want to take notes, they are able to. 7) Prepare a Training Agenda. Prepare an agenda before hand to ensure that all elements of LOTO are covered during the training. Topics can include items such as identification of isolation points on each machine, what's included on a LOTO placard (if available, these are machine-specific LOTO details) and how to read it, which LOTO device to use, etc. In addition, at times learners may have questions during training, so be ready and take the time to respond thoughtfully to each one. 8) Prepare Your Sign-in Sheet. It is important to ensure there is a sign-in sheet available to verify attendance of all learners. Make sure to outline specifics about what will be covered in the training, dates and times the training will occur and identify what machines will be used for practical training. WSPS.CA
