BY THE INDUSTRY, FOR THE INDUSTRY PAGE | 11 CONCLUSION The comprehensive risk assessment and root cause analysis workshops conducted in the food manufacturing industry in Ontario have shed light on the top areas of concern when it comes to workplace safety. The analysis considered perspectives from multiple stakeholders, revealing existing challenges and gaps related to the number one safety hazard in the industry: inadequate lockout/tag out. It also identified opportunities to address this hazard. While there is a shared agreement between stakeholders, some differences in perspectives have surfaced — highlighting the opportunity for additional open dialogue. The five recommendations identified by the working group provide a direction for the prevention system, industry partners, and food manufacturers alike to address inadequate LOTO in a meaningful and effective way. This may include activities like sharing detailed information, creating rules and standards, designing training programs that empower people, and enhancing enforcement and compliance measures. Implementation of these recommendations will require collaboration and commitment from everyone — including employers, workers, industry associations, and regulatory bodies. By harnessing the hard work of the participants in the risk assessment and root cause analysis processes, the food manufacturing industry can take meaningful steps to reduce the risk of lost-time injuries and improve workplace safety. Moving forward, it will be critical to continue engaging all stakeholders and keeping lines of communication open to prioritize the well-being of workers. By embracing the recommendations, and committing to continuous improvement, lockout and tag out can become a strength in the industry. For Rob Ellis and the legacy of his son David, the message around inadequate LOTO in the province's food manufacturing industry is clear. "We can do better together. We need to do better," he said, adding there is high turnover in the industry and that investing in health, safety and well-being is a solid recipe to retain talent and improve the bottom line. "Together, we can create a workplace culture where people are valued and protected."
