BEYOND THE WRENCH PAGE | 11 CONCLUSION The risk assessment and root cause analysis workshops for the vehicle service and repair sector provided a clear path forward to reduce the risk of exposure to MSD hazards from handling objects and awkward postures. WSPS and Ontario's prevention system partners will harness the knowledge gained from this initiative to help this sector improve workplace environments and create a health and safety culture. Melissa reflected on what will come next. "I'd like to see the culture shift continue on its current path, where workers get the right information about MSDs that is relevant to the tasks they perform and employers engage in ongoing and meaningful conversations about workplace health and safety," she said. RECOMMENDATIONS FOR ACTION The following four recommendations were proposed by the group. 1) AWARENESS – Develop MSD awareness that covers both general content and certain industry-specific tasks. Mandate general and industry-specific MSD awareness for workers, supervisors and employers. 2) EDUCATION – Mandate general and industry-specific MSD awareness in secondary and post-secondary schools, including relevant content for the tasks being performed. 3) ENFORCEMENT – Develop MSD safety talk packages for certain industry specific tasks, including visual aids, micro-videos and hands on components. 4) TRUSTED RESOURCES – Establish an industry partnership resource, connecting workers and employers to trusted MSD resources. Workplace Safety and Prevention Services will conduct a gap analysis to assess what tools currently exist that align with the workshop recommendations and will develop new tools and resources. They will also leverage their existing relationships with relevant industry associations to disseminate this valuable information to their members.
