INDUSTRY LED, RESULTS DRIVEN PAGE | 8 " " "The collaborative brainstorming was a high point for me. You can really see how the information all comes together on the second day. The process is a very effective one." —Marrianne Prestado, Farm Boy worker representative Informed Discussion led to Targeted Solutions The second day of the root-cause analysis workshop focused on brainstorming solutions. The group generated more than 200 possible controls and solutions to reduce the risk of MSDs from handling product, many of them centred around training. Melissa was inspired by the energy of the workshop participants who seemed determined to make a difference. "It's so important for us to listen to front-line workers and find out what they need to be successful," she said. "We may be the experts in health and safety, but they are the experts in their business. They know what will actually make a difference in their day-to-day work," she said. Lisa Hooper, Ontario MLITSD Provincial Ergonomist, was also in the room to gain insight into how MSDs are affecting grocery store workers on a day-to- day basis. "I think what impressed me most was the group's understanding of the multifactorial nature of MSDs, recognizing the influence of organizational factors like ordering practices and worker allocation to tasks, along with the physical factors like the size of storage areas or the height of inbound pallets. Their understanding really showed in the breadth of the recommendations they produced," said Lisa.
