HOW TO READ A WHMIS SAFETY DATA SHEET WSPS.CA 15 305-BST-01-IMDO © 2024, Workplace Safety & Prevention Services (WSPS) 1 877 494 WSPS (9777) | 905 614 1400 | WSPS.CA SECTION 7: HANDLING AND STORAGE This section describes safe work practices and procedures that must be used in order to safely handle or store the hazardous product. 7.1 Precautions for Safe Handling May cause skin, eye and respiratory irritation. Work under fume hood and/or local exhaust ventilation source. Avoid generation of vapors and aerosols. Do not inhale. Ensure adequate ventilation and respiratory protection. Use eye, skin and body protection. Ensure safety showers and eye wash stations are immediately available. May form explosive mixtures with air. Keep away from sources of ignition including heat, sparks, static and open flames. Protect against static discharge. Bond and ground equipment, containers and receiving vessels/containers. Use only with intrinsically safe, spark-proof, and explosion- proof equipment or tools. Protect containers. Do not drag, roll, slide or drop. Never eat, drink or smoke while using this material. Wash skin after handling. Handle empty containers with care. Residual vapors are flammable. This area provides the following information: Precautions for Safe Handling: specific actions or measures that must be taken by the user to minimize adverse harm when handling the hazardous product. This may also include descriptions relating to chemical reaction hazards or handling practices that must be avoided when using the hazardous product. In this example, some of the following safe handling instructions are particularly noteworthy: – Highly likely to cause health effects and requires ventilation and personal protective equipment (PPE). – Highly flammable and explosive material. Sensitive to static discharge. Requires ignition source control such as bonding and grounding, and spark-proof equipment and tools. – Waste containers may still contain residual flammable vapors and could cause a fire or explosion.
