Mandatory Off-duty Time
After a period of at least 8 hours off-duty, a driver cannot:
– drive more than 13 hours
– drive after having been on-duty for 14 hours
– drive after 16 hours have elapsed
Cycle Requirement
There are 2 available cycles:
1. In a period of 7 consecutive days, a driver cannot drive after
being on-duty for 70 hours.
2. In a period of 14 consecutive days, a driver cannot drive after
being on-duty for 120 hours.
– In this cycle, drivers cannot drive after accumulating 70
hours on-duty without taking 24 consecutive hours off-duty.

MTO website and the Ontario Regulation 555/06 under the
Highway Traffic Act.

Discuss the exceptions under the regulations with your crew.
Driving: Driving times may be exceeded by up to two hours if:
1. The driver encounters adverse weather or driving conditions not
known by the driver or dispatcher at the beginning of the trip.
2. The driver could have completed the trip under normal circumstances
within the times established.
