LANDSCAPE ONTARIO – WORKPLACE SAFETY TAILGATE TALKS 132 © 2026, WSPS.CA Observe site for private utilities such as gas BBQ, infrared mosquito's devices, and consult with a private utility locator as required. If digging a trench or a deep dig, you may need a utility company representative present while you dig – they will confirm this. Pay attention to know if hand digging, machine digging, vacuum or hydro digging is directed or permitted on the application. Be mindful while hand digging as aggressive stabbing into the ground can sever utility connections. Do not plant, excavate or stake trees without utility location. Painted lines from utility companies are only accurate within 1 metre or 3 feet of the line. Allow for error and carefully hand dig within this zone. Electrical lockout/tagout means to terminate the power at/or close to the source, and to have it under lock and key so power cannot be restored until service/repair has been completed. Considerations for locking out the power of electrical equipment: Unplug/disconnect the power of all electrical equipment at the source before repair or service. Remove workers from area and keep them in a public area. Lockout the power box with a lock. Only the operator doing the repair/service should have a key to the lockout lock. Tag the electrical device, noting the unit is under repair. Place appropriate danger signs on or around equipment being serviced to warn other workers. For public utility locate services, contact Ontario One Call. ACTION! Openly discuss with crew best practices for digging and planting.
