All rights reserved. 34 CONCLUSION The story that readers should take away from the findings of the Health and Safety Leadership Survey over the last three years is that health and safety saves lives, it creates resilient and prosperous organizations, and it is a key differentiator in attracting and keeping employees. For organizations that are just starting out and those already on the journey, the findings in these surveys can help build a solid business case for commiting to and investing in a culture of health and safety, or enhancing what is already in place. There are a few key takeaways from this year's report. PAY ATTENTION TO THE GAPS BETWEEN EMPLOYEE AND EMPLOYER RESPONSES. THEY PRESENT RICH OPPORTUNITIES FOR IMPROVEMENT. The inclusion of employee responses in this year's survey provides valuable insights that can be used to enhance health and safety programs. There were several instances where opinions differed. The ones that stood out were support for remote work, onboarding, and encouragement of vaccination. These questions can be used as a starting point for evaluation if you don't already have something in place. LISTEN. Lynn Brownell, President and CEO at Workplace Safety & Prevention Services says, "We tend to evaluate programs and practices from a 30,000 foot, organizational perspective, but what this survey, and so many other indicators tell us is that employees are looking for alignment between organizational and personal values. They want to know that they matter to you, not in a broad, theoretical sense, but in a deeply personal and carefully considered way." This excerpt from the article Workplace Wellness + Communication = Retention, published by the International Association of Business Communicators, sums this up nicely. "More than ever, organizations must take a holistic approach toward recruiting and retention. Be authentic. Walk the talk. Make quality hires that align responsibilities with natural strengths, not just experience. Listen. Provide opportunities for growth. Listen. Celebrate wins. Be supportive. Ask questions. Listen. Implement suggestions. Pay attention to exit interviews. Create opportunities to maximize employee potential. Then listen. Communication is key."
