Use standardized symbols and color codes to label equipment, hazardous areas, and emergency exits. Ensure signs are visible and maintained regularly. Physical barriers prevent unauthorized access to dangerous areas and protect workers from hazards. Install barriers around machinery, restricted zones, and hazardous regions. Regularly inspect and maintain these barriers to ensure they remain effective. Controls, such as start/stop buttons and safety interlocks, ensure safe operation of machinery. Place controls in easily accessible locations and ensure they are marked. Train workers on the proper use of these controls. Emergency stop devices allow for the quick shutdown of machinery in an emergency. Install emergency stop buttons or pull cords in prominent, easily accessible locations—Mark emergency stop buttons with standardized symbols and colour codes. Regularly test and maintain these devices to ensure they function correctly. Hazardous Energy Control Program (Lockout/Tagout) A Hazardous Energy Control Program, commonly known as Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), is crucial for protecting workers from the unexpected release of hazardous energy during maintenance and servicing of machinery. A LOTO program prevents accidents and injuries by ensuring machines are properly shut off and all energy sources are isolated or controlled, preventing them from restarting until maintenance is complete. Consider the following resources for your workplace's LOTO program: Lockout/Tagout Training Guide – This guide helps employers develop a LOTO training program for authorized and affected individuals, highlighting best practices for delivering the training. Effective Lockout Training Tips – Tips from a Machine and Robot Specialist to ensure your LOTO training engages workers and prevents injuries. Lockout/Tagout eCourse – An online course covering all necessary LOTO principles to increase awareness, including the eight types of energy sources. WSPS.CA
