5.2 Specific Hazards Arising from the Product
Highly flammable liquid and vapor
Products of combustion include: Carbon Oxides
Fire may flashback
Vapors are heavier than air and can spread along floors
Forms explosive mixtures with air at normal room
temperature
This area describes potential risks related to fire, reactivity, and other
conditions, involving the hazardous product. In this example, we are able to
gather the following information:
– The product is highly flammable in both its liquid and vapor form.
– Carbon Oxides (like Carbon Monoxide) may be produced if a fire occurs.
– Fires with this product may "flame back" on themselves. This can enhance
a fire or cause an explosion.
– Vapors can easily spread along floors.
– If exposed to the air, the hazardous product is explosive even at normal
room temperatures (20-25°C).
5.3 Special Protective Equipment and Precautions for
Firefighters
Evacuate all non-emergency personnel from the danger
zone.
Use self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) and
protective clothing.
Cool containers from maximum safe distance.
Remove ignition sources if safe to do so.
If flames are accidentally extinguished, explosive reignition
may occur.
Allow fire to burn out.
Vapor forms explosive mixtures with air and oxidizing agents.
If leaking gas catches fire, do not extinguish flames.
Vapors are heavier than air and may spread along floors.
Prevent fire extinguishing media from contaminating water
systems including ground water.
This area provides instructions for firefighters and emergency response
personnel.
