What are some ways we can prevent incidents when dealing with electrical hazards? ! Overhead power lines and contact with buried cables while digging are two major sources of injuries and fatalities. Prevention Points Workers need to be aware of their surroundings including overhead wires; downed power lines; and underground wires (Refer to Utilities). Here are other considerations when working around electrical hazards: Review the General Health & Safety Best Practices section on page 11 before performing any task. Call utilities to locate underground wires before digging. Always be aware of overhead power lines to avoid contact. Comply with the 10-foot power line clearance rule. Use a portable GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupter) for added protection. Always follow electrical lockout procedures when servicing or repairing electrical equipment or tools.
