Between 1990–2008, tractors have been involved in 37% of all agriculture related fatalities in Canada. Many of these were due to three types of machine-related incidents: machine rollovers, machine run overs and machine entanglements (CAIR, 2011). In Ontario, industrial vehicles, including tractors, account for an average of 7,525 lost-time injury claims every year (WSIB, 2024). ! Tractor rollovers – both sideways and backwards – are likely to result in death if the operator is not protected by and properly using a roll-over protective structure (ROPS), which includes a seatbelt. Proper guarding of a Power Take-Off (PTO) shaft is essential to reduce the risk of entanglement – it can take less than one second for a person to be entangled in the equipment. Prevention Points Operators must be alert at all times and maintain complete control of their tractor and equipment. Here are some tractor and equipment safety tips:
