LANDSCAPE ONTARIO – WORKPLACE SAFETY TAILGATE TALKS 86 © 2026, WSPS.CA During uphill compaction, it may be necessary for the operator to swing the compactors handle around and pull the machine slightly. Plate compactors tend to slide sideways when operating on a sloping terrain. To prevent the plate from sliding, steer the plate toward the rise of the slope to angle the machine. Whenever assembling, lubricating or adjusting any part of a plate compactor, stop the engine and disconnect the spark plug. If necessary to use equipment for lengthy periods, take frequent breaks or rotate task with another worker. When not in use, cover the plate compactor and store in a dry place. ACTION! Show your crew members the proper way to use the equipment specific to the task at hand.
