According to the World Health Organization (WHO) bacteria,
viruses and parasites were responsible an estimated 7.7 million
deaths worldwide in 2019 (WHO, 2020).

Awareness and containment of the biohazardous sources are
key factors in preventing severe illnesses and injuries.
Prevention Points
Some sources of biological hazards in the landscape industries
include bacteria, viruses, insects, plants, birds, animals, and
humans. These sources can cause a variety of health issues
ranging from skin irritations to allergies to infections.
Review the General Health & Safety Best Practices section
on page 11 before performing any task.
Inspect worksite for any potential biohazards and report
to supervisor immediately if biohazard is found.
Use appropriate precautions e.g. clothing, specialized
products, etc., if working outdoors particularly when
mosquitoes are biting.
Keep all vaccinations including tetanus shots up to date.
