LANDSCAPE ONTARIO – WORKPLACE SAFETY TAILGATE TALKS © 2026, WSPS.CA 125 Make sure all tools, plants and equipment are secure and the load weight is balanced. The weight of the load should be estimated to ensure compliance with the provincial road regulations (e.g. 4,500 kg = truck, trailer and load). Make sure the trailer is level when unloading. Always block the back end tires of a trailer when loading and unloading. Always use a spotter (guide) when backing into a space. Always wear your seat belt when driving. Always use a large red flag if the load extends beyond the back of the truck or trailer. Ensure brake lights and reflectors are in working order. Check tires. Check your vehicle registered weight and the loads you are carrying as you may require a CVOR. Refer to the Commercial Vehicle Operator's Registration program for more information. ACTION! How heavy is your crew collectively? The first step is to list all of the items that make up your load, including: your truck, trailer, people, equipment, plants and materials. Assign an appropriate weight to each item and add up the total weight. Compare the weight to the 4,500 kg (9,900 lb) limit.
