TRUCKS AND TRAILERS – LOAD WEIGHT

What are the consequences of not registering or performing
an annual inspection on your vehicles? Does everyone know
where the log books are for each vehicle?
!
Being aware of the legal requirements regarding your
truck and trailer will save time, money, avoid audits from
the Ministry of Transportation and reduce the risk of
injuries related to trucks and trailers.
Prevention Points
Each truck and trailer unit requires a separate maintenance
inspection. By law in Ontario, The Ministry of Transportation
requires a Commercial Vehicle Operators Registration (CVOR)
and an annual inspection at a certified service station if:
The registered gross weight is more than 4,500 kg (9,900 lb)
(weight on the registration)
The weight of the truck, trailer and load is 4,500 kg (9,900 lb)
or greater
Certification applies to a truck and trailer
Please note some other requirements:
Trailer brakes are required if the trailer and load has a gross
weight of 1,360 kg (2,990 lb).
A secondary trailer hitch is required in addition to the main
hitch. Ensure the hitch is secure and the secondary hitch
(chain/cable) is attached.
Verify in the log book that there are no outstanding repairs
or tags on the vehicle or trailer.
Complete a daily circle check, verifying fluid levels, gasoline,
lights, brakes, and ensure that mirrors are in good working order
(Refer to Trucks and Trailers – Circle Check).
