TRUCKS AND TRAILERS – CIRCLE CHECK
?
How often should a circle check of any vehicle be performed?
What items should be considered during a circle check?
!
It is the vehicle operator's responsibility to ensure their
vehicle is well maintained and in safe operating
condition
each and every time it is used to transport workers and
materials to a jobsite.
Prevention Points
A circle safety check is a physical walk around inspection of any
vehicle to ensure the safety and condition of the vehicle before
and after use. Circle checks are imperative for incident prevention:
Review the General Health & Safety Best Practices section
on page 11 before performing any task.
Circle checks should be performed by the vehicle operator
on a daily basis and/or per driver.
An inspection checklist can help inspections be more efficient
and ensure all elements are checked in a consistent manner
specific to each piece of equipment/vehicle.
A safety maintenance log must be kept for each vehicle and
initialed by the inspecting operator.
Truck and trailer circle checks do not replace the requirement
to circle check other equipment such as tractors, mowers,
or power tools.
The following diagram is a sample of items to include in a
circle check for class A&D drivers. Refer to MTO regulation for
Vehicle Safety, Maintenance, and Daily Inspections for more
information on what to include in a workplace circle check.
