Provide adjustable workstations and equipment where possible to accommodate appropriate range of worker sizes. Place frequently handled materials in unobstructed areas. 2 Manual handling while bending, twisting, or tilting back and/or neck or working with arms overhead or outstretched OHSA Sec.25(2)(a) (d)(h) Regulation 851 Sec.45 CSA Z1004 B.3.3.2 Tool 3b, 4b, 5b, 6b, 8b Ensure workers can see their work clearly without needing to view around obstructions. Provide suitable material handling devices and maintain in good working order. Position materials, tools, and equipment so that workers can reach them easily and position themselves closely. Provide appropriate instruction and training on proper manual materials handling techniques for specific tasks. 3 Heavy lifting from floor or lowering from above shoulder height OHSA Sec.25(1)(b), (2)(a)(d)(h) Regulation 851 Sec.45 CSA Z1004 Tool 9b B.3.3.4 Place frequently used and heavy materials between shoulder and thigh height. Ensure that containers have handles, and limit capacity or split up heavy loads where possible. Establish weight limits for materials that can be manually handled, with heavier materials requiring a two-person lift or appropriate lifting device. Maintain lifting devices in good working order. 4 Manual handling tasks involving the same movements performed consistently CSA Z1004 Tool 7b, 18b Provide workers with opportunities to do different tasks using different muscles. Encourage workers to warm up their muscles and stretch at the start of the workday. Organize the work with the most demanding manual tasks performed earlier in the shift so that workers are less fatigued.
