Leaders have an opportunity to remove fear from the equation and create
an environment where employees trust they can be honest and contribute
to the conversation without being judged or penalized.
The Deloitte article "What Leaders Can Do Now to Adapt to the Changing
Environment" discusses the need for leaders to shift their mindset from
being a "routine taskmaster" to a "humanistic curator" to foster innovation,
growth and strong connections with employees.
The curator:
Adopts a humanistic mindset, and enhances capabilities continuously
Personalizes communication, and connects with workers individually
Takes personal accountability for workforce experience, and
collaborates with leaders at all levels
Leverages cross-functional relationships to inform and govern
a holistic strategy

SENIOR LEADERSHIP
Sandra Miller, VP of Governance
and Strategy at WSPS believes
the way leaders communicate
can eliminate fear and bolster
safety, civility and respect in
the workplace. "I've been a
firm believer in applying the
principles of improv in my work
for many years. 'Yes, and…'
are two simple words that can
transform conversations, team
dynamics and business outcomes.
Amy Edmondson says good
leaders ask good questions. I
believe that's true. I also believe
good leaders are open to and
build upon unexpected answers.
When we do this, we break down
barriers and nurture innovation
and improvement."
Tip
"Without trust between management
and workers you can never move
beyond the ridiculous TRIR
(Total Recordable Incident Rate).
Focus on what really matters scares
workers. Listen to the people who do
the work. More rules do not equal
safer workplaces."
