Across all respondents (Leading to Start of Journey and all industries)
98% indicate that a robust health and safety program is important to
overall business success. The same number—across all industries—
agree that having a culture of health and safety is key to sustainability.
Overall, just over half of survey participants indicate they conduct a
formal evaluation of their plan. However, the numbers are significantly
lower for less developed respondents. Only 35% of Start of Journey,
36% of Reactive, and 37% of Managing respondents say they measure
how they are performing against their plan.
It's also interesting that there is universal agreement that attraction and
retention is the top business challenge, but when it comes to criteria
used to evaluate plans, only 19% say that they use attractiveness as an
employer as a metric. However, that score does represent a five percent
bump over 2019 responses. The top three metrics used by respondents
are legislative compliance (72%), reduced injuries and costs (70%), and
employee engagement (58%).
Those with the most mature health and safety programs are more likely
to see the impact of health and safety on key indicators of success.

Overall, employer scores for opportunities in organizational performance
were lower than in previous years. However, there was quite a difference
between employee and employer scores across the board.
With home ergonomics, employers knocked themselves down to 30%,
an 11% drop from 2020, but employees ranked performance at 45%. With
respect to psychological safety, employers rate themselves at 40% and
employees rate performance at 47%. Employers rate themselves at 45%
for work-life balance and employee empowerment, but, in both cases,
employees say this should be 50%.
The top three
drivers of health
and safety are:

2. Caring for

3. Senior leadership
