WSPS President and CEO Lynn Brownell says that the Mental Health Commission of Canada's 13 Factors for Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace are often assessed and applied at an organizational level, but they can be very effective as the basis for one-on-one conversations to understand individual concerns and preferences. "This is another tool we can use to strengthen relationships with individual employees and make sure that we're meeting their unique needs. Each employee is going to weight these factors differently." 9 The 13 Factors for Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace are: 1 Organizational culture 2 Psychological and social support 3 Clear leadership & expectations 4 Civility & respect 5 Psychological demands 6 Growth & development 7 Recognition & Reward 8 Involvement & Influence 9 Workload management 10 Engagement 11 Balance 12 Psychological protection 13 Protection of physical safety CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE In 2021, WSPS, in partnership with the Conference Board of Canada, developed the Mental Harm Prevention Roadmap (the Roadmap). It aligns to the National Standard of Canada for Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace, and breaks it down into relatable, manageable building blocks. The beauty of the roadmap is that it doesn't have to be applied in a linear fashion. Employers can pick and choose areas of focus based on priorities and preferences in their workplaces. It is an evidence-based guide that facilitates the creation of mental health strategies that suit the needs of workplaces of all types and sizes. 10 ©2022 Workplace Safety & Prevention Services.
