Defining Prevention
10
Preventing mental harm and promoting mental health aim to reduce the incidence, prevalence, and
recurrence of mental health disorders and their associated disability. Preventive interventions are based on
modifying risk exposure and strengthening the coping mechanisms of the individual.
Health is defined as "a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the
absence of disease or infirmity" by World Health Organization (WHO)
Prevention of mental distress and mental/psychological injury can be
considered aims and outcomes of a broader mental health promotion strategy.
