PSYCHOLOGICAL PROTECTION
Organizations should consider all possibilities when developing a safe
culture – this includes not just physical hazards, but psychological
hazards as well. This culture would reflect a space where employees
feel safe in sharing their ideas or asking questions free of reprisal,
where unnecessary stress is minimized and where employees truly
feel that their well-being is considered and valued. Dr. Martin Shain,
principal and founder of the Neighbour at Work Centre, defines a
psychologically safe workplace as "one that does not permit harm
to employee mental health in careless, negligent or reckless ways."
This means taking a mindful and reasonable approach to ensuring the
promotion of mental health and prevention of mental harm at work.
When this is done successfully, it creates a workplace that values
psychological protection.
