Management checks in several times a week with staff to monitor their health and well being and all staff are encouraged to speak up and report any discomfort. All rights reserved. 20 The results of the 2020 survey reveal a significant jump in the importance of leadership support. Overall, 51% of respondents, an increase of 32%, agreed and said that this is a key driver for improving health and safety. When asked whether senior leaders are involved in health and safety in their organizations, almost all respondents with mature health and safety cultures and those in the Managing category said yes, but the numbers dropped significantly in the Reactive and Start of Journey categories. Among Reactive respondents, 42% said this was the case, and 39% of Start of Journey organizations felt the same. Only 4% of Leading respondents and 9% in the Proactive category felt this way. It is also interesting to note that the lowest score is in the Reactive category, the same group with the highest number of responses (53%), indicating that lack of employee engagement is the number one barrier to implementing health and safety procedures. In Organizational Culture and the CEO, 4 Barb Keenan, Senior Vice President, People, Culture and Chief Ethics Officer at Ontario Power Generation noted that their safety culture has always driven their organization. She said that leaders in their organization believe in walking the talk and feel that leading by example is critical to health and safety success. Given the number of organizations that believe health and safety will become even more important in the future, leadership commitment will be imperative. The Deloitte article, "The heart of resilient leadership: Responding to COVID-19" highlights the opportunity for CEOs to help their organizations emerge stronger in the "next normal."
