Workplace Safety & Prevention Services 2012 Annual Report SAFETY FIRST, PRODUCTION SECOND, PRICE AND DELIVERY THIRD When Miller Technology was selected for a WSIB Workwell audit in 2011, one of the first things its leaders did was find a health and safety partner who could help. They came to WSPS for a solution, and emerged with a health and safety culture — in the process, passing their second Workwell audit with a gratifying 96.3 per cent. Miller Technology is a family-run organization based in North Bay that has been designing and manufacturing mobile equipment for the global mining industry and Ontario's industrial sector since 1979. As Vice President, Operations, Chad Miller understood intuitively that the mandate for health and safety belongs to the owners of an enterprise — the people who are responsible for preventing injuries and illness. His close encounter with Workwell led him to implement a sustainable, top-down and bottom-up health and safety program that protects its people both on the job and at home. In his own words: CHAD MILLER, Vice President, Operations, Miller Technology Inc. 6 WSPS has a great reputation. We knew they weren't someone who would throw us a product and run away. We wanted to talk to someone in our industry who specializes in manufacturing and knows what they're doing. WSPS has a huge database to pull from, giving us the confidence that the safe operating procedures they provided wouldn't just be made up on the fly, and wouldn't miss things. Their credibility was what won it for us. At Miller Technology, we don't risk our workers' safety to make a delivery date. Everyone wants things cheaper and quicker these days. We're going in the other direction: safety first, then quality, then price and delivery. We don't reschedule our in-house training schedules for any reason. We insist that employees take safety as their top personal value — at work and at home. Once they get their mind around it, they stay with us for many years. They tell their family and friends. I'm starting to see fewer personal injuries at nights and on weekends on the home front. They look out for each other, and everyone watches the new workers. New hires can't believe how safe we are. It's really changed our business and culture. We are constantly revising policies and communicating with employees at our morning safety meetings. Our WSPS consultant gave us his personal cell number. We can reach him day or night. When we had problems with a couple of safe operating procedures, he talked to other clients who agreed to release their SOPs to us. That's going above and beyond. We haven't had a long-term injury since employees started to believe in our commitment to health and safety. Our workers look out for each other
