Workplace Safety & Prevention Services 2012 Annual Report SUSTAINABLE STANDARDS FORM THE BEDROCK OF SAFETY CULTURE There is something truly Canadian about being first in the world to release a national standard for psychological health and safety in the workplace. One of dozens of issues addressed by CSA Group, mental health problems and illnesses cost Canada's economy tens of billions of dollars each year. CSA Group is working with WSPS to provide training and education on the new standard to help organizations support and continuously improve psychologically healthy and safe work environments for their employees. CSA Group and WSPS formed an alliance in 2004, sharing a vision to reduce the personal suffering and negative economic consequences of occupational injury and disease. Their mission is to make a difference by collaborating on training, events, and other projects, where the impact of working together exceeds the impact of each organization working separately. Bonnie Rose, President, Standards, CSA Group, says the alliance helps to develop and maintain relevant, timely and leading-edge occupational health and safety (OHS) standards for Canadian workplaces. In her own words: BONNIE ROSE, President, Standards, CSA Group 12 CSA Group and WSPS have a strong, multi-faceted and transparent working relationship. We work together in many different areas on a daily basis: from the development of standards, and training and education products, to marketing, sales, government relations and strategy. Thirteen WSPS employees sit on 18 of CSA Group's technical committees, including the one on mental health. WSPS is a valued strategic partner, participating on the strategic steering committee, and on technical committees related to psychological health and safety, safeguarding of machinery, control of hazardous energy, industrial lift trucks, agricultural machinery, and many more. They bring significant industry expertise to our development process, and their participation is a vital component of developing strong and robust Canadian standards. We've developed several training courses and conferences jointly, highlighting numerous areas of OHS risk, and educating workers and employers on how to manage these safely and efficiently. They also provide valuable advice on how to help put the standards into practice. When we work together on implementation, education and training, we are able to reach a broader and more engaged audience. Working together, we are able to provide stronger educational products and services to industry
