Making a JHSC Effective
A number of things help a JHSC become effective. Start by:
ƒ Preparing and sending out agendas ahead of meeting times
ƒ Setting meeting times in advance
ƒ Setting goals
Setting goals is important for a JHSC to be effective. JHSC teams that set goals are more likely to get
things done. Goal setting also builds team co-operation and tasks become more efficient. It also helps
a company to meet legal requirements easily.
It is important for the owner or senior management to provide active support to the JHSC. Their
involvement in health and safety is the lead that people will follow.
An effective JHSC:
ƒ Focuses on solutions and issues
ƒ Keeps in mind the differing interests in a company (e.g., cost, priorities)
ƒ Admits when they don't know the answer
ƒ Embrace ongoing learning
