A research study
conducted in 2017 of over
400 young adults seeking
employment in Ontario
explored the perspectives
of youth (age 16-25)
regarding challenges
that they faced in entry-
level jobs*. Analysis led
to identification of key
challenges and preferred
support strategies that
could optimize their
success at work. The four
key recommendations
are based on stories and
experiences shared by
the participating youth.

4 Key Support Strategies
1. TRAINING AND MENTORSHIP
Starting a new job can be challenging –
especially for young people just entering
the working world. It takes time to develop
the confidence and skills to meet job
demands. Stress and anxiety can interfere
with understanding and remembering instructions, and with
performing job tasks both properly and safely. You can help
by providing clear written and verbal instructions regarding
job expectations, information on when and where to turn
for help, and if possible, a caring mentor.
2. VALUE AND RESPECT
Young people in entry-level jobs may
feel they are not respected or valued.
Make a personal connection with youth
by checking in with them on a regular
basis. Show that they are appreciated by
thanking them for their efforts, and by providing positive
feedback or recognition for work that is done well.
