A research study conducted in 2017 of over 400 young adults seeking employment in Ontario explored the perspectives of youth (age 16-25) regarding challenges that they faced in entry- level jobs*. Analysis led to identification of key challenges and preferred support strategies that could optimize their success at work. TRAINING AND MENTORSHIP Starting a new job can be challenging – especially for young people just entering the working world. It takes time to develop the confidence and skills to meet job demands. Stress and anxiety can interfere with understanding and remembering instructions, and with performing job tasks both properly and safely. You can help by providing clear written and verbal instructions regarding job expectations, information on when and where to turn for help, and if possible, a caring mentor. 2. VALUE AND RESPECT Young people in entry-level jobs may feel they are not respected or valued. Make a personal connection with youth by checking in with them on a regular basis. Show that they are appreciated by thanking them for their efforts, and by providing positive feedback or recognition for work that is done well. In partnership with
