The Canada Labour Code requires all federal workplaces with 20 or more employees have a work place health and safety committee. Employers that directly employ 300 employees or more need to have a policy committee. Employers are required to support the establishment of their committees and "ensure that members of policy committees, work place committees and health and safety representatives receive the prescribed training in health and safety."
The new Policy Committees, Work Place Committees and Health and Safety Representatives Regulations came into force on July 1, 2015, replacing the Safety and Health Committees and Representatives Regulations (SHCRR). In addition to other changes, it prescribes the components of the health and safety training program required by the Canada Labour Code.
