Ergonomics is defined by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as the scientific study of people at work. The goal of ergonomics is to reduce, prevent and/or eliminate injuries associated with the overuse of specific muscles and tissues due to awkward posture or repeated tasks.

This comparative research made possible through research-stakeholder partnerships offers a unique opportunity to use existing administrative data to identify long-term trends in disability burden. The objectives of this study were (1) to identify age and sex trends in the disability burden of compensated work-related musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) in Canada and Australia; and (2) to demonstrate a means of comparing workers’ compensation data internationally.

Off the floor! Assessing people's ability to recognize lifting risk factors for low back pain and the impact of a simple educational message

A collaboration project between WSPS, Centre for Research Expertise in Musculoskeletal Disorders (CREMSD), and the Ontario prevention systems. Through the use of task-specific videos the research group is currently assessing how stakeholders are perceiving the risk of lifting various objects off the floor. The first stage of this project is complete and a poster with a simple message to help prevent lower back injuries will be available here soon.
