2014 Safety Groups Members achieve dramatic success in preventing workplace injuries

Release Date:  Nov 11, 2015

Workplace Safety & Prevention Services (WSPS) congratulates its Safety Groups members for stellar performance during the 2014 program year. Results just released by the Workplace Safety & Insurance Board (WSIB) show that members of the WSPS 2014 Safety Groups slashed their lost-time injury frequency rate by 13.24%, and their injury severity rate by 18.97%. As a result of this success, the 433 member firms that successfully completed the 2014 program will receive a combined $6.4 million premium rebate.

Created by the WSIB, the Safety Groups program helps Ontario businesses of every size build their own comprehensive health and safety program. It's a gradual, self-sustaining process that enables the employer to take control of its health and safety performance - preventing injuries, cutting injury costs, and earning a WSPS premium rebate in the process.

Businesses join the program one calendar year at a time. At the beginning of each year, members select five elements of a health and safety program that will help them improve their performance. They learn how to implement these elements at group meetings where they can tap into WSPS expertise and resources, and the hands-on experience of other members. WSPS health and safety consultants facilitate the meetings and are available to members between meetings. With each additional year, participating firms add five more elements to their evolving health and safety program.

"As the largest Safety Group sponsor in the province, we are absolutely delighted with these results," says Elizabeth Mills, President & CEO, WSPS. "Our Safety Group members have committed to making health and safety a priority. They are not only reaping rewards for their efforts, they are creating truly meaningful change and, as a result, even more workers are going home safe at the end of the day."

Recruitment for the 2016 Safety Groups program is currently underway with registration closing on December 31, 2015. For more information on how the WSPS Safety Groups can benefit your business, contact WSPS at 1-877-494-WSPS (9777) or customercare@wsps.ca.
