The Ministry of Labour has approved amendments to consolidate all regulatory requirements respecting confined spaces under the Occupational Health and Safety Act into one regulation, Confined Spaces (O. Reg. 632/05).
The amendments also revoke confined space provisions in the following four sector-specific regulations are revoked:
851, Regulations for Industrial Establishments
213, Regulations for Construction Projects
67, Regulations for Health Care and Residential Facilities
854, Regulations for Mines and Mining Plants.
At this point, says Workplace Safety & Prevention Services consultant Martin Albinger, the amendments appear to be for consolidation purposes only. “I cannot see any substantive impact in an industrial or service setting of these changes to an employer's confined space program,” says Albinger.
The amendments come into force on July 1, 2011.
